Crib Safety & 411
By now most people are aware drop-side cribs are no longer available for sale in the U.S. (These were cribs that most of us adults grew up in when we were babies… how time flies!).
If you’re in the market for a crib right now what you’ll see are fixed side cribs and convertible cribs.
Fixed-Side cribs generally only have a 1-2 settings: crib + toddler bed
Convertible cribs generally have 3-4 settings: crib + toddler bed + daybed + full-size bed
On to the safety… so how do you know if a particular crib is going to be safe for your little one?
1. Our first general rule of thumb is always shake and feel the crib you’re considering purchasing. Sounds basic, right? Well, although it sounds rather basic shaking the crib gives you an idea of how much the crib weighs, its construction, and durability.
2. All cribs sold today carry certifications from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). The JPMA represents crib manufacturers, the CPSC is a U.S. government safety agency.
3. GreenGuard – is the crib GreenGuard certified? With many babies putting their little mouths on the cribs parents are wanting assurance that the paints and finishes are baby safe. Cribs carrying GreenGuard’s certified mark have been tested and meet the worlds most rigorous chemical emissions standards.
4. Nursery sets made in America, Europe, and Canada generally tend to be of superior quality in grade of wood used, finish, and hardware (e.g. drawer glides).
